What are the differences between osteopathy and the other allied health professions, such as physiotherapy?
Osteopaths are commonly asked this question, and it is a very sensible one! Of course we want to understand the differences between the therapies and treatments that are on offer.
The distinguishing features of osteopathy are:
- a focus on the musculoskeletal system
- a commitment to treating the body as a unit, where the affected part is seen as impacting the whole
- techniques such as deep and soft tissue massage, dry needling (similar to acupuncture), and manipulation
- osteopathic treatment is suitable for all ages & a variety of musculoskeletal complaints
- treatments which last for at least 30 minutes
You may be given exercises to practice in your own time, and your osteopath may recommend changes to workplace ergonomics if that is impacting on your health.
